Some symbols are simply seen… while others inspire us to shape the way we live.

The Scout scarf is not merely a piece of fabric worn around the neck. It is a promise, an identity, a message, and a legacy that travels with its wearer wherever they go.

Every year, on August 1, Scouts around the world celebrate World Scout Scarf Day. To some, it may seem like a symbolic occasion. But for millions of Scouts worldwide, it carries a much deeper meaning.

The Scout scarf is not simply part of a uniform. It is a global symbol that brings together more than 60 million Scouts across more than 177 countries, representing shared values that transcend borders, languages, and cultures.

When you wear the Scout scarf, you are not simply declaring your membership in a Movement.

You are declaring your commitment to a way of life.

A way of life built on duty to God and country, helping others at all times, and living by the Scout Law—a set of principles that develops a strong sense of responsibility, volunteerism, leadership, and service to the community.

And perhaps one of the most beautiful things about the Scout scarf is the special respect it receives wherever you go.

Whenever I have worn my Scout scarf, people of different ages and backgrounds have approached me with a smile and said: “I used to be a Scout…”
or “I always wished I had been a Scout.”

In those moments, you realize that Scouting is not simply a phase of life that comes to an end. It is an experience that remains in the heart, no matter how many years pass.

As for me, I still remember the first time I wore my Scout scarf.

It did not simply change how I looked… It changed the way I thought.

I began to look for impact before achievement, to focus on developing people before implementing projects, and to strengthen systems rather than simply improving procedures.

I learned that leadership is a responsibility, that institutional work is the pathway to sustainable achievements, and that the most valuable investment begins with people—especially young people, because they are the energy of the future and the drivers of change.

From that day forward, the Scout scarf was no longer just a Scouting symbol to me.

It became a daily reminder of the values I chose to live by.

And that is when I understood that the Scout scarf does not distinguish you from others by what you wear…

but by what you do. Its true value is not in its colour or appearance, but in the impact created by every person who wears it.

That is why the timeless saying, “Once a Scout, always a Scout,” continues to live in the hearts of millions. Because it does not describe membership in an organization. It describes a way of life that stays with you wherever you go.

Today, nearly 125 years after the birth of the Scouting Movement, the Scout scarf continues to bring millions of people together under one shared banner—leadership, service, responsibility, and impact.

My message today is simple:

If you see someone wearing a Scout scarf, remember that they are carrying more than a symbol around their neck. They are carrying a promise, values, responsibility, and a commitment to leave the world better than they found it.

As for me…

Whenever I wear my Scout scarf, I am reminded that the greatest gift Scouting has given me was not a position, an event, or an award. It was the person I became because of this inspiring Movement.
