The Future of Sports Over the Next Fifty Years

Written by Dr. Hamada Alantably
Those observing the sports landscape today will find us in a state of extreme flux. It is a given that the only constant today is change; everything is evolving. We are facing a successive series of transformations over the next fifty years. I would like to discuss the future of sports through several key dimensions:
1. The Nature of Athletic Performance
Athletic performance is in a state of continuous evolution, driven by modern training methodologies and technological advancements. We are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to analyze player performance and provide recommendations that contribute to elevating motor and technical skills. This is enhancing the specific attributes that make the critical difference in an athlete’s output, leading to a significant and noticeable shift in the training system as a whole. This trajectory is evident when comparing the motor performance of athletes over the last fifty years to previous eras. Notably, some second-tier English league stadiums have already seen an AI-powered technical director, signaling the hyper-acceleration of the future.
2. Organizational and Administrative Shifts
The administrative sports environment will undoubtedly witness significant evolution with the increased reliance on technology and digital transformation. We are seeing restructuring and changes in job titles and their respective requirements to keep pace with the modern era. There is also a shift toward expert systems as performance accelerators, reducing human errors stemming from a lack of experience or competence. The International Olympic Committee and various sports federations are updating their structures and workflows around the clock, digitizing and automating all administrative tasks—such as the now fully digital player transfer processes—which offers a glimpse into what lies ahead.
3. Media and Marketing
In terms of media and marketing, we are witnessing rapid, massive leaps. Television and digital broadcasting are undergoing a major transformation, moving toward digital media concepts and virtual events that can broadcast entire experiences via hologram technology. This trend is expected to intensify over the next fifty years. As for marketing, it remains the largest market attracting major investors, with a new player entering the arena: Blockchain. These technologies have emerged so forcefully that player transfers, and the buying and selling of clubs, have already been conducted using digital currencies. This indicates a complete transformation in the shape of sports, allowing fans and investors to play active roles in the sports ecosystem.
4. Electronic Sports (Esports)
We must highlight a new competitor that has recently emerged strongly on the sports scene: Electronic Sports (Esports). This sector is witnessing massive growth in the sports investment market, with major global markets in the United States and China competing intensely. The number of followers and practitioners of these games and their international championships is constantly increasing to a degree that significantly threatens the throne of traditional sports. The value and role of Esports were further highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought traditional stadium life to a standstill, heralding a new reality through electronic games. The Esports market experienced significant growth and is poised for even greater evolution in the coming years.
I want to emphasize that what has been mentioned above is not science fiction or mere speculation; it is the reality we are living today, which will continue with us into tomorrow. We must be prepared for the acceleration of this evolution and the rapid change witnessed in the sports arena. The examples of this transformation are numerous and ever-increasing.
